Living with our Star

Living with our Star – St John’s Square

16 – 31 October 2020: 6pm – 10pm daily

In 2019, Lightpool Festival and Light Up Lancaster presented a world premiere, SUN, in a partnership between public artist Alex Rinsler and Prof. Robert Walsh, one of the UK’s leading solar physicists.

SUN was a breath-taking seven-metre diameter suspended sphere, presenting astrophysical data from NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory in stunning 360°. SUN impressively displayed several months in the life of our closest star, but in tens of minutes of real time.
SUN Projection
In 2020, we are continuing our partnership to present a visual mapping experience as we turn St John’s Church, located in Blackpool Town Centre, into a spacecraft and begin an episodic tribute to the sun. The show will focus on our relationship with the sun throughout human history and will feature striking visuals such as solar flares and the latest graphic effects, linked with factual content. Specially commissioned music by the students from Guildhall School of Music and Drama will complement the solar projection. Don’t miss it!
