Wilkommen, old chum . . . join the Cabaret!
This week, we went along to the dark and sultry performance of Cabaret in the gorgeous Winter Gardens Opera House. This is a Bill Kenwright production, directed by Rufus Norris. Cabaret has enjoyed two smash hit West End runs and has picked up 2 Olivier Awards, and we were dying to find out why!
Pre-WW2 Berlin is the home of the delectable and dangerous home of the Kit Kat club, where young American writer Cliff finds himself entwined in this underworld of cabaret, smuggling and politics. As he falls in love with the star of the show, Sally Bowles, the tension of the performance reflects the terrifying political climate of the time, concluding with a chilling end that we won’t spoil!
Will Young won the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2001 and then became one of the UK’s most popular and successful music artists with four No. 1 albums. Will made his West End debut in this fabulous show, and is reprising his award winning performance as the darkly hypnotic Emcee in one of the best-loved pieces of musical theatre.
His effortless presence is in equal parts childlike and sinister as the much-loved EmCee. The legendary ‘Wilkommen’ was a delightful homage to the original, and Will’s voice really shone through with ‘Tomorrow Belongs to Me’, with disturbing comparisons to be drawn with Hitler and the people of Germany.
From her R&B beginnings with girl band Eternal, Louise Redknapp’s talent repertoire has just got bigger and bigger! She has presented television shows and been a judge on So You Think You Can Dance, and then she returned to Blackpool as the enigmatic Sally Bowles!
Liza Minelli’s glittery tap shoes are big ones to fill, but Louise more than holds her own, exhibiting the vulnerability and spark needed to play one of Broadway’s favourite characters. Her voice is clear as a bell, and packs a real punch!
One of the team said: "Will Young owned the stage at last night’s performance of Cabaret, playing the part of Emcee with gay abandon. He kept the audience laughing throughout until the very end when a tear was on the horizon. The show was a joy to watch, every member of the cast played their part beautifully, the singing was excellent, the cast actually hitting the notes proved to be a real treat for a Blackpool audience."
The sets were dramatic and really provided the necessary atmosphere, and the costumes were perfectly executed, making all of the cast look absolutely gorgeous!
The cast received a standing ovation and the end of the performance, and it was so well-deserved.
The show is on until Saturday, 7th October . . . and it CANNOT be missed!
