An eager group of knitters have provided a woolly donation to this year’s Remembrance services.
The ‘Woollen Words’ group, who meet every week at Palatine Library, have knitted two full poppy wreaths that will make up part of Sunday’s Remembrance Day commemorations.
The two wreaths were donated to the Mayor on Thursday, and will be placed by the cenotaph ahead of the services on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
One of the knitters, Helen Bunn, said: “It took twelve of us around a month to make the two wreaths. It wasn’t complicated to do but a little time consuming.
“It’ll be really nice to see the wreaths as part of the big display.”
Mayor of Blackpool, Cllr Val Haynes, added: “The wreaths are absolutely wonderful. Yet again, the people of Blackpool have shown how caring they are and how they love to be part of everything that goes on in Blackpool.”
In honour of the Council’s commitment towards Armed Forces, a large poppy Illuminations tableau has also been set up near the Cenotaph, with the display commemorating the service of veterans from Blackpool over the years, ahead of two services on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
The Bishop of Blackburn, Julian Henderson, will lead Sunday’s Remembrance service, which will take place at the Cenotaph at 10.50, also including a two minutes’ silence and a wreath laying ceremony in memory of those who gave their lives in the service of their country, followed by a parade.
On Armistice Day, a two minutes’ silence will also be held at the Cenotaph at 11am.
The Woollen Words group meet every Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm at Palatine Library.
