Aladdin Panto at The Grand is Great Fun for All Ages, With Kids or Without!
Question: Can you go to see Aladdin at the Grand Theatre if a) your child isn’t a child anymore and b) they cry off at the last minute?
Answer: Oh, yes you can!
With some trepidation, I took myself off to the opening night of this year’s pantomime at The Blackpool Grand Theatre on Friday. The very nice team at The Grand Theatre let me sit with them, so I wasn’t truly on my own. It had been a few years since I went to a panto as there are usually no end of volunteers to write about the Grand panto from those in the team with young children. However, it was my turn this year and had a fabulous evening of fun, belly laughs and a visual treat for the eyes.
From start to finish, Aladdin was great fun not just for families with young children but for anyone of any age. There was a stream of silly jokes from start to finish, some of which went way above the children’s heads, really cute references to the local area with some very tongue in cheek digs!
Wishee Washee played by Steve Royle (now in his 14th year!) held the whole show together with his usual quick wittedness, jokes, puns and fantastic visual comedy timing. Local girl Hayley Kay from Radio Wave looked completely at home returning to the stage after the birth of her new baby boy Freddie, and Widow Twanky (Philip Meeks) entertained with her array of cartoon style costumes from Love Hearts to a Chinese cat!
The dancing and children from Barbara Jacksons Theatre Arts Centre were a delight, and Mark Moraghan as the evil Abanazar had all the audience booing and hissing in traditional style. The stunningly beautiful Princess Lacy Jordinson, and comic magician Mark James also provided a great addition, all of which made the whole show a visual delight throughout.
With all-round great performances from all the artists and dancers, with the starring role of Aladdin played by Barney Harwood from CBBC fame making this a top class show, making you laugh and smile throughout. You must go and see this as your Christmas treat and you don’t even need a child with you to go – great, all round fun, giving your Christmas that special twinkle.
