On 24 November a new marketing company, Marketing Blackpool, was established, intent on positioning Blackpool as Europe's premier seaside resort.  The company will provide support to visitBlackpool in the promotion and marketing of the resort as a destination as well as organising some of Blackpool’s key events.

Marketing Blackpool will initially be wholly owned by Blackpool Council but is an arm’s length company that will have a board of directors from the private sector along with a private sector chair.  The first representatives on the board of directors will come from Merlin Entertainments and Pleasure Beach Resort, Blackpool.  It is anticipated that additional board members will be appointed in the forthcoming months with details relating to the recruitment process to be issued in due course.

Alan Cavill, Assistant Chief Executive for Regeneration, Tourism and Culture for Blackpool Council, comments, “The establishment of Marketing Blackpool will mean that it is able to work more closely with the private sector in order to promote the resort.  By working with external companies, Marketing Blackpool will be able to market the resort much more effectively and work to develop a much stronger brand, developing the product which Blackpool has to offer.  The aim is to establish Blackpool as Europe’s premier seaside resort by building on the fantastic work which visitBlackpool has done.  This will ensure that we are well set to achieve this target.

It is anticipated that, in time, the company will be owned by both the public and private sector but its current position provides a solution to enable the private sector to direct activity.

Services which will be provided by Marketing Blackpool, in addition to marketing and events, includes the operation of the resort’s Tourist Information Centre along with both Business and Leisure Tourism functions.

The company’s activity will be delivered by staff from visitBlackpool who are to be seconded into the company.  A copy of the company structure will be available to view on the Marketing Blackpool website in the next few days.  Natalie Wyatt will continue to head up the division and has been appointed Managing Director.  Natalie will answer to the board to ensure its aims and objectives are being met.

Natalie Wyatt, says, “The establishment of the company marks a significant change in the way Blackpool Council views marketing and destination management as a whole.  It is very much a welcomed change which provides opportunities that under the previous guise of visitBlackpool would have been unobtainable.  This allows the remit of the company to be much wider than tourism which is exciting in itself.”
