Lancashire is a county steeped in heritage and tradition, from the Medieval Lancaster Castle, to the working 19th Century mills. For the cultured, a tour of Pendle will not only allow you to discover the story of the infamous Pendle Witches, but will also introduce you to the beautiful countryside which was Charlotte Brontë’s inspiration for scenes in Jane Eyre. 2008 is Lancashire’s year of Food and Drink, and events will be taking place throughout the county celebrating some of the regions best loved produce and recipes from Lancashire Cheese to Lancashire Hotpot and from Morcambe Bay Shrimps to tasty Sarsaparilla. The more active will love Lancashire for the sheer number of walks and rambles to be found within it’s borders, from gentle rambles along historic canals, to the challenging 32 mile Witton Weavers Way.
If that gives you the desire to fill your lungs with more fresh air, head north to the Lake District England's five tallest mountains, herdeepest lake, two national parks and three areas of outstanding natural beauty should
provide more than enough outdoor adventures for you to choose from. Or why not search out those idyllic spots which have inspired so many of our greatest writers, over thousands of years, including William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin, amongst many others.
Liverpool is European Capital of Culture for 2008, so what better time to explore the city’s fascinating maritime past? With literally hundreds of events taking place over the year celebrating everything which made Liverpool the city it is today, from exploring the impact the slave trade has had on the world, to showcasing some of the highlights of the most eclectic music scene in the country which spawned the sounds of the Beatles, The Lightning Seeds, The Zutons, and many more in between.
The southerly border of England’s northwest is the historical county of Cheshire, and it’s county town, Chester, which is rich in Roman and Medieval heritage. Balancing heritage with a more modern twist, the ‘Rows’ in Chester (Medieval two-tiered shopping arcade) have become a wonderfully eclectic mix of unique boutiques, designer shops and high fashion high street brands.
Manchester is also a great place to shop till you drop, both in the city’s many vast malls, and designer boutiques or in the stunningly vast Trafford Centre. Nightlife in the city is always bustling, and of course, the atmosphere in Manchester’s gay village is one of the most famously friendly in the UK, if not the world.
